The Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as The 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the toughest 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old offered a rather mysterious statement in his post-match interview despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points lifted Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to four matches.

But, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period within the club.

"How the lads are eager to learn has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with so many problems, they are doing very well after a difficult week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people withheld support from us."

Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City manager continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Fitness and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, remarking they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play almost all season minus our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the commitment from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.

Speculation Over Maresca's Remark

It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that timeframe, the Italian had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a training session at Cobham, attended a pre-match press briefing where he seemed at ease, and secured a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was unclear whether any specific press stories had irked him, if social media comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
