Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
