A minimum of 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of a major criminal organizations.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered participants in an organization from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Extensive security missions are regular in the country ahead of major international events in the country.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is taking place in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
